Shrines of Paralysis

JAH This album is more accessible than their previous ones, adding some more conventional melodies but watering down their approach a bit. Still an excellent album, but a bit of a disappointment for those who live by the style on EIF, TDOA and Vermis. Favorite track: Abrogation.

Alexander Vikhrestiuk This was my first experience with Ulcerate. Initially, I did not feel like this style of death metal is something I could get behind - and indeed, it was a challenging listen, even on the second spin. However, it didn't take me long to finally succumb to its crushing riffs, merciless drumming, and inhuman growls, which come together in what is one of the most structurally creative and immensely satisfying pieces of music I have had a chance to hear in 2016.
Hop on the bandwagon, folks. Favorite track: Extinguished Light.

gh0staraj Album of the year. Most acts in metal these days are either using a nauseating amount of predictable melodies or destroying their overall song structures by thinking that irrelevant equals progressive. These masters however, clearly know how to be creative while staying true to the concept. I'd very much like to call them Deathspell Omega of Tech Death.

Forward-thinking, unorthodox New Zealand death metal trio ULCERATE return with their latest masterwork 'Shrines Of Paralysis,' a flawless continuation of the band's signature sonic philosophy. 'Shrines Of Paralysis' spans eight tracks of singular death metal, incorporating a wider range of styles and ideas than ever before. Influences both within and beyond metal abound: organic, inventive phrasings and novel compositional techniques round out a thundering package of death, doom, and black metal stylings. As is characteristic of the band, 'Shrines Of Paralysis' is about much more than just the music. The production, themes, and atmosphere all shape ULCERATE's music, and help guide the way through a highly evocative palette of dark and light passages, subtly dramatic rhythmic manipulation, and unparalleled technical heaviness. The band's most cohesive and powerful release to date.
